Neither Nick nor I had actually read the origin issues of Marvel Comics’ “The Transformers,” and since we were such fans of the television cartoon, an early, easy decision for story direction was to satirize the opening five-part episode “More Than Meets The Eye.” Nick wrote the script in two weeks and I spent the next two and a half years drawing only when I felt like it. The early printings of issue 1 proved I knew nothing about drawing for reproduction – I went back in and tweaked the artwork in December of 1996.
