Every year the National Endowment for the Arts, in conjunction with the Institute of Museum and Library Services, runs a program that encourages communities to read and celebrate a great work of American literature. In 2009 the book was Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and Nick Nadel and I were invited to host two seminars outside of Nashville, TN. Our angle: Adapting Tom Sawyer for comics, or the graphic novel form, to use the fancier term. Middle schoolers and college students attended, and a good time was had by all.
