As a sophomore I was unsuccessful in enrolling in David Mazzucchelli’s “Comics Storytelling” class, though I did complete the first assignment, a “how to” process with no words. I also did that first assignment a year later when as a junior I again was unsuccessful in joining the class. Senior year did the trick, though I managed to do that same first assignment twice. The class focus was on clear storytelling, as opposed to anatomy, inking, or action, and assignments were relatively simple and short, allowing students to spend time on layout, pacing, and camera angles.
