In college, the two semesters were divided by a short term wherein one concentrated in just one or two classes for 6 weeks. I took Nick Jainschigg’s fun “Sci-Fi and Fantasy Illustration,” which could also have been named “Sci-Fi Book Covers.” Below is my complete work for the three projects: Designing a character and then putting it on a book cover, illustrating a book cover for Phillip K. Dick’s “Second Variety,” and illustrating a book cover for story I can’t remember the name of. It featured a captain taking his ship too close to a black hole over the objections of… the ship’s doctor? (Some of the white paint in those ones has shifted to pink.) Here are studies and finals. Essentially pre-internet, I bought a Polaroid and had fun taking reference photos of my friends and continuing the gouache color mixing I had started in the previous semester. I didn’t learn how to paint, though.
